There are times when a tooth needs a root canal. A tooth needs a root canal if it has extensive decay that goes into the nerve channel, has extreme sensitivity and discomfort to temperature or biting, or is severely fractured or broke. During root canal therapy, the soft tissue on the inside of the tooth is removed and the canal is irrigated and cleaned out with special instruments. Once the canal is prepared, an inert filling material called gutta percha is used to seal the canal. Using proper anesthetic techniques and antibiotics when needed, Dr. Firtel is able to successfully manage any discomfort associated with the treatment.
